Many eye problems can develop in patients, and without warning. If these eye problems go without proper diagnosis and treatment – they can and will progress with no symptoms to the patient. Early on, you may not notice any change in your vision. However, there are diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears/detachments, as well as other significant health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, that can be detected with a thorough medical exam of the eye retina.
What information does an eye wellness exam/screening provide?
There are many benefits to having an eye exam. A wellness eye exam/scan is used to confirm healthy eyes or on the flip side – help detect the presence of any eye disease(s). An eye exam is essentially an overview, or a map, of the patients’ retina. This exam gives your eye doctor a more in-depth detailed view of what is happening inside the patients’ eye. This is often a much more efficient and accurate way to gain this information than he/she can achieve by any other means.
This is also the best opportunity for the patient to review and discuss any retinal images that are taken of their eye at the time of their exam. Their optometrist will maintain a permanent record for the medical file of the patient – this enables the optometrist and the vision specialists to make important comparisons and diagnosis if potential problems that may present themselves at any future examination.
Who should I see for my eye exam?
It is very important to bring relevant information to your eye exam. Important information includes anything that will help alert your optometrist of risks that you may have for potential eye or vision problems.
One thing to bring with you in particular, is a list of any and all current prescription or non-prescription medications that you are taking or that you took on a regular basis in the past. Be sure to include vitamins and other non-traditional herbs or remedies that you may be using. It is also important to include the dosages you take for each medicine/vitamin, and also include how long you have been taking them.
If you are prescribed any corrective lenses, be sure to bring all pairs of eyeglasses that you wear routinely. If you wear contacts that were prescribed from another optometrist, bring with you a copy of your most recent contact lens prescription. We will also require a copy of your vision insurance card and any other medical insurance cards if you will be using insurance coverage for a portion of your accrued fees. Last but not least, be sure to prepare a list of questions or concerns that you have and would like to discuss with your optometrist.
