Who is a good candidate for laser eye surgery?
Patients who wish to undergo laser surgery for vision correction will need to have healthy eyes. Patients who undergo LASIK will need a cornea that is thick enough to allow for the required alterations to the tissue. PRK procedures may be possible for some patients who are not viable for LASIK. Regardless of which type of laser surgery you wish to have performed, you will need mostly healthy eyes free from cataracts, infection, glaucoma, chronic dry eye, and other conditions. Patients are usually only considered if they are over the age of 21 and have had stable vision for at least one year prior to surgery, they must also not have been diagnosed with any autoimmune or degenerative diseases. Women who are pregnant or nursing will not be able to undergo surgery until their hormone levels have stabilized.
How does corrective vision surgery work?
During your laser vision correction surgery, a beam of light will be precisely utilized to reshape the surface of the eye. By improving the shape of the cornea, we are able to improve several different vision problems. For patients with nearsightedness, the cornea is flattened, patients with farsightedness can benefit from steepening the cornea, and smoothing irregularities on the cornea can benefit those who suffer from astigmatism. By altering the shape of the cornea in accordance with your needs, your doctor can improve the way your eye functions, allowing your retina and cornea to work better together and provide sharper focus of images in your daily life. Most LASIK and PRK procedures take only about 15 minutes per eye.
What is recovery from laser corrective surgery like?
During your procedure, your doctor will utilize anesthetic eye drops to numb the eye area, so you are able to remain comfortable during your surgery. Following your procedure, you may wish to use pain medication to reduce any discomfort you may experience in the days following your surgery. For most people, normal activities including work and driving can be resumed the day after their procedure is performed, those who wear makeup can resume its use one week after their surgery. The most common side effect of a LASIK procedure is dry eye, and some patients may experience a halo effect noticeable around lights. You will need to see your doctor for a follow-up the day after your surgery, approximately one week after your surgery, and again about one month and three months later. At Excel Eyecare Professionals, Dr. Leon Kubicki and his team can help you understand the recovery process you can expect based on your individual surgery and anatomy.
